The King County Council’s Transportation, Economy and Environment committee will be meeting on June 17th to discuss their recommendations for the K-Line. The next step will be in front of the full council for a final vote. They need to hear from us now!

Over a year ago, the council discreetly sanctioned the preliminary engineering and design work for Business, Access, Transit (BAT) lanes on 108th Ave NE. The city cites research conducted in 2017 as the basis for the necessity of these lanes which would also accommodate right-hand vehicle turns. The process was delayed by the pandemic but re-emerged in the spring of 2024 without consulting the public.

What wasn’t discussed until the city was challenged, was the need for additional residential and business right of way, which will have a significant impact on homes and businesses on northbound 108th, between 62nd and 68th. The initial plan also included a BAT lane between 53rd and 60th with a traffic signal at 60th. However, Metro has subsequently removed this from their plans.

The city is scheduled to release its 30% design report this month. At that point, the project will be transferred to Metro for inclusion and hopeful funding of their K-Line Rapid Ride project. Even then federal approval as well as $50 million grant from the federal government would still be needed.

Despite major harms that this plan will do to neighborhoods, the BAT lanes will only minimally improve Metro’s K-Line “speed and reliability”.
